Alternate Fieldtrip Activity
I attended Wheeler Sunday Market, in Murray Utah. I had the chance to interview local farmers and growers along with event workers. This market has been open since the first week of June and will run until the last week of October. All farmers who attend are local growers, although some for example have their produce shipped in and will sell it, such as peaches. This market is only available to attend on Sundays from 9 am until 2 pm. This is a very big event for locals, it is evident by the activity and hundreds of cars filling the parking lot and trailing the side of the road. This is not any ordinary farmers market, it is an event and worth attending! It is valuable because of how alive and how much energy there is there. So many warm welcoming faces and people saying hello. There are approximately 90 booths each Sunday, though it differs each one. The same farmers attend each week, though of course some may not be able to make it each week, but their appearance is very confident.
Not only are there booths selling produce but booths selling salsa and jams. There is such a wide variety and booths of fresh berries to rich vegetables. It is not limited to just that either. This market is so valuable because it is very family fun centered, there is a park and large pavilion on sight lined with dozens of food trucks from every shape and every flavor. There is also booths selling homemade merchandise and sweets. Some of these things included, doggy treats, henna tattoo services, woodwork instruments, sheet music, baby clothes, and jewelry. There was a lady playing her harp in her booth which made the environment feel very warm and welcoming. I had the opportunity to ask one of the workers there if there are ever events or performances that take place here during the farmers's market, she said that there are no restrictions, they want everyone to feel apart of the experience. In fact there is a little girl about 9 years of age who about every week will come and play here guitar and sing for people.
There were even booths where it stated, "Gardening Questions" Inexperienced Gardners have the chance to be educated and informed on how to grow their own produce as well as plants. This is a great environment for people of all ages since there are products that strike everyones attention and interest, literally from infant to the elderly. I saw many moms with their kids there letting them choose some of the produce, which I thought was a great way for kids to start enjoying finding healthy food from a young age and having good memories associated with it.
I have never attended a farmer's market before, apart from a small booth I attended in my local grocery store parking lot, I have only been limited to driving past them and thinking how much I would enjoy fresh produce since I enjoy cooking. Now since I have been exposed to one like Wheeler's Sunday Market, I will for sure be attending and living up every minute of it and it's unmatched environment.
