So what? What now?
A strong work ethic is central to farmers in their day to day activities. They prove this through their disciplinary daily tasks. This is shown through waking up early to complete chores that are mandatory in order for the farm to progress. In order for this work to be successful, they must work with passion. Without this passion, desired outcomes can no wise be accomplished with efficiency. This creates a job environment that is not fit for everyone, but the values and ideas taught can benefit anyone in their field of expertise. This labor is grueling, yet, despite external conditions farmers must have a mindset to control the uncontrollable.
Folklore plays a vital role in this aspect concerning values and traditions in farming passed down from one generation to the next. Usually farms are a family matter. Values such as what a grandfather would teach his grandson and the importance of getting work done and done well. This could be shown through the grandfather’s routine actions and the grandson observing, so then later on the grandson will walk in his grandfather’s footsteps. Character is built through hard work and sacrifice. Which describes farmers to a T. Again, making it a job that is not meant for the average person. It takes someone very special and determined to be able to do the work that is required of them.
This job is very selfless, it is family and community based. Farmers play an important role for communities in order to provide healthy food for individuals and families. Media for decades have placed farmers at the helm of what the ideal person should become. Many times this person is displayed as a farmer, one with work ethic and true character who finds a way to become successful and do the hard work for a positive outcome. Some of these types of media include, posters and propaganda advertising how it is admirable to be tough, like these individuals are.
Though laws do not give farmers the credit they deserve or work compensation and benefits, farmers continue to provide. They provide for their families, their communities and their country. Without them and the work ethic they have, society would not have things that bring them job. Restaurants and dining are a major part in pop culture which farmers have direct influence over. Without them, this world and this country would not be the same. To develop a work ethic such as theirs this country would abide in success and prosperity; not just individually, but as a whole, as a community.
